Jeremy Renner is known internationally for his stint as Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for the uninitiated, the actor began his acting journey as early as 1995, with a comedy, National Lampoon’s Senior Trip. After his breakthrough with the 2009 war thriller The Hurt Locker, there was no looking back.

Renner has already scored two Academy Award nominations, four Screen Actors Guild nominations, with one nommie for Golden Globes and four for Critics Choice Awards. Ian Donnelly in Arrival (2016)

The film scored eight nominations at the Academy Awards and won in one category. The scifi drama was directed by renowned filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, based on a 1998 short story by Ted Chiang. Jeremy Renner plays a physicist, Ian Donelly here, who must figure out with linguist Louise Banks, portrayed by Amy Adams, what the locally hovering extra-terrestrial ship means to convey, by deciphering its message and connecting it with the eleven other ships’ clues to form a unified whole message or gift for humanity.

Hawkeye in Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Hawkeye (2021)

Based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, Hawkeye, aka Clint Barton is one of the most underrated Avengers, because of his apparent lack of superpowers. Despite being the only one among them to possess the title only because of his talent and hard work, cinematic Hawkeye got little recognition and appreciation till Hawkeye and Black Widow’s touching scene on Vormir. With his own series in 2021, Hawkeye finally started receiving some of his due credit, especially because of his fine portrayal of PTSD in a war veteran of an inter-galactic and inter-timeline war.

William Brandt in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011)

Impossible Missions Force officer Ethan Hunt was joined by Jeremy Renner’s William Brandt, an ex-field agent and an intelligence analyst who assists the IMF Secretary. In this film, despite Tom Cruise’s protagonist Hunt’s author backing, Jeremy Renner’s Brandt shines in his own right due to his sincere and eye-catching preformance.

Jem Coughlin in The Town (2010)

The Town was a box office hit, grossing over $150 million worldwide, on a $37 million budget. Renner plays Jem, a hot-headed, gritty robber, who along with his three friends, including Ben Affleck's protagonist Doug, rob a bank and kidnap its manager Claire, with whom Doug falls in love. However, there are enough twists and turns, as well as betrayals and police encounters in the film to give one an adrenaline high as well as pricking tears.

Sergeant William James in The Hurt Locker (2008)

The Hurt Locker is one of those war thrillers that shakes the box office with its sheer power. As protagonist Sergeant William James, Jeremy Renner is exceptional and raw in his portrayal of being a tough but caring leader of a US army explosives disposal team. The film earned Renner multiple nominations at the Oscars, BAFTA, Independent Spirit Awards, as well as the Screen Actors Guild.
