Ajith Kumar, who began his acting career as a romantic hero, starred in the 1996-released love story Kadhal Kottai, along with Devayani. The Agathiyan directorial narrates the story of a young woman named Kamali and an orphan man named Suriya who fall in love through letters, without meeting each other. The film emerged as a massive commercial success and earned multiple honours at the National Film Awards.
