Geralt of Rivia is back again in the third season of the popular Netflix series The Witcher.
Geralt of Rivia is back again in the third season of the popular Netflix series The Witcher. Henry Cavill reprises his role as Geralt for one last time before Liam Hemsworth takes over the role from the next season. Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan, and Joey Batey also reprise their roles for the new season as the main characters. For today’s Now You Know we take a look at lesser-known facts about season three of the fantasy series, which is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels.
- Aretuza – the Hogwarts-style magic school for young female mages is pivotal to all three seasons of The Witcher. It has been revealed that the actresses playing the various mages including Anna Shaffer and Therica Wilson-Read, who play Triss and Sabrina respectively, have a WhatsApp group called Chaos with a flaming love heart emoji. The name Chaos refers to the mystical power often considered synonymous with the power of magic in the lore of The Witcher. New mages are added to this group every season.
- Andrew Laws, Head of Franchise Design confessed that he has refused to take inspiration from the hit Witcher video game adaptations for visual references contrary to popular belief. He also added that his son plays the games and that he is aware of its environment. This could, unfortunately, explain why the visuals and costumes, especially from the final episode of Season 3 Vol I look like they’ve been borrowed from Bridgeton, and not a medieval fantasy about terrifying monsters.
- With regard to world-building, the set or the ‘super-set’, is among the biggest ever created for a TV series. Andrew Laws has revealed that the set is completely interactive where people can move in and out and through corridors. He also added that these passageways are designed to be in an infinite loop where a person can keep moving and turn corners without ever having to stop.
- Costume designer Lucinda Wright has revealed that each character has a specific colour assigned to them. For instance, the colour blue represents the Kingdom of Cintra and its Princess Ciri, the colour green is for the elves, the colour purple for Yennefer of Vengerberg, and unsurprisingly Geralt is assigned the colour black to add a goth aesthetic to his character. Additionally, eagle-eyed fans will also notice that the colour of Yennefer’s eyes changes depending on her mood. The more intense her powers become or the more intense she feels, her eyes become even more darker.
- Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich revealed that one of the series directors, Loni Peristere, provides little index cards to all the extras playing background characters. These cards feature mini-background stories for the characters they are playing.
- Actress Freya Allan, who plays the role of Ciri, revealed that when filming began she started having dreams of herself as Ciri killing giant monsters. It appears her dreams have manifested in the story as in season three Ciri does fight terrifying giant monsters with her sword and magical powers.
