Leo box office collection Day 2: Thalapathy Vijay's film plummets in Karnataka, APTG

Leo's box office slump, to put things in perspective, has evidently emerged from its performance outside of Tamil Nadu.

Vijay in 'Leo'

Thalapathy Vijay and Lokesh Kanagaraj's reunion was always meant to carry a lot of expectations, considering their first collaboration 'Master' was a major commercial success. Their second outing together, Leo, arrived in theatres on October 19 with a lot of promise (unsurprisingly) and much to the delight of the fans, it began its theatrical run with a proper bang.

At the domestic box office, Leo has reportedly grossed over Rs. 75 crores on the opening day with the worldwide collections going past the Rs. 140 crores mark. A superb start by all means, Leo seemed well on course to set new benchmarks at the Indian box office that could give other recent blockbusters like Jawan, Jailer and Gadar 2 a run for their money. In Karnataka alone, Vijay's film collected Rs. 13.9 crores on Day #1 to make it the highest 'opening day score' for the superstar actor in the state.

However, things haven't lived up quite well to expectations because the latest trade reports suggest that Leo has encountered a considerable dip in its collections on Day #2. According to trade aggregator sacnilk.com, the film has managed to gross over Rs. 41 crores on the second day of its theatrical run and while that is a flattering figure on its own, one still cannot look past the 45.6% slump in the earnings.

To put things in perspective, Leo's small decline, as it were, emerges from its performance outside of Tamil Nadu. Despite the excellent start in Karnataka, the film could muster only Rs. 4 crores (exact figures unknown), nor could it retain its Day #1 momentum in Andhra Pradesh/Telangana and Kerala.

In the two Telugu states, Lokesh Kanagaraj's film yielded Rs. 5.3 crores as opposed to a whopping Rs. 15.4 crores opening day. Kerala, similarly, turned out to be not-so-conducive for Thalapathy Vijay & co. with only Rs. 5.8 crores on the second day against a Rs. 12 crore start.

Could the drop be attributed to the largely mixed reviews that the film has received? Well, to a certain degree, yes, but one must also take the influx of big releases into account before drawing conclusions. Leo opened in theatres along with three other major regional releases which potentially have road-blocked its great start, and with both Bhagavanth Kesari and Ghost receiving positive reviews, it is highly likely that the respective 'local audiences' have opted to invest in these films. It would be interesting to see how far Leo goes in its theatrical run and whether, or not, it will breach the mark set by predecessors like Jailer and Ponniyin Selvan 2.
