Lakshmi Menon, who was seen latest in Vikram Prabhu's Pulikkuthi Pandi, will headline a film, titled Malai. Directed by newbie IP Murugesh, a former assistant to filmmakers Seenu Ramasamy and Susienthiran, Malai will also have Yogi Babu, in an important role. Produced by R Ganesh Moorthy Soundarya of Lemon Leaf Creation Private Limited, the supporting cast includes Kaali Venkat, Singam Puli and Ramachandran.

Speaking about Malai, Murugesh, tells Cinema Express, "It's a film about a young doctor who is accustomed to the city lifestyle but has to visit a village. What happens when she meets a fake village doctor and both end up having conflicts over various issues form the rest of the story." The report, further, published by Cinema Express, adds, that Malai is a social drama that deals with human emotions and how people have preconceived notions about certain topics they aren't accustomed to.

Malai, which went on floors in 2021, has been shot extensively in Theni. Malai has editing by Kasi Viswanathan, music by D Imman and cinematography by Theni Eswar. Lakshmi, on the other hand, has AGP Schizophrenia and Sippai, in the pipeline. Yogi Babu, who was seen latest in Kadaisi Vivasayi and Beast, has a slew of projects in kitty including Sivakarthikeyan's Ayalaan, Shaitan Ka Bachcha, Kasethan Kadavulada, Naane Varuven, and so on.

The filmmaker had told Silverscreen that he had written Malai sometime in 2018, but owing to the pandemic-induced restrictions, they could not commence production until recently. The published report reads, "Malai is about the journey of a woman who has never been exposed to rural life. She is a doctor and goes to a village. The story follows the things she experiences there and how they change her life. Lakshmi Menon essays a role of the doctor." It looks like all the characters in the film are inspired by real people. "Lakshmi Menon and Yogi Babu’s characters are based on the people I have come across in real life. However, I’ve developed them with fictional elements," the director had told Silverscreen.
