Laal Singh Chaddha: Gippy Grewal claims to have proposed re-dubbing Aamir Khan's Punjabi dialogues

Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha which released in theatres a week ago, is not quite making the impact that it was expected to at the box office. Punjabi musician and actor Gippy Grewal recently opined that this could be because the film didn’t resonate with the audience due to its inaccurate portrayal of the Punjabi dialect.

Grewal and his team had provided assistance to the makers to get the Punjabi dialect right in the Bollywood remake of Forrest Gump. In a recent interview with DNA, Grewal said everything seemed absolutely fine up until when he and his crew worked on the film's Punjabi dialect and vocabulary. However, after watching a few rough cuts of the movie, the actor decided it wasn't up to the mark and informed the Laal Singh Chaddha producers. He also praised Aamir for his role in the movie and commented on how wonderfully it was presented.

He revealed to the media outlet: “My crew, which included actor-writer Rana Ranbir, assisted them in writing Punjabi dialogues. However, after viewing the film's rushes, I advised a re-dub so that the Punjabi would be accurate. Although they agreed with me, they made no changes.” Grewal said that the movie struggled to connect with the viewers in some sense due to the poor Punjabi dialect.

Previously, Punjabi actor Sargun Mehta mentioned her dissatisfaction with Aamir's accent in the film. She admitted to India.com, “I can say that he could have done a bit better.”

In Laal Singh Chaddha Aamir portrays a Sikh character, and the movie’s story is also extensively set in Punjab. Laal Singh Chaddha is the official Hindi remake of Tom Hanks' Academy Award-winning 1994 film Forrest Gump. The film is directed by Advait Chandan and produced by Kiran Rao, Viacom18 Studios, and Aamir Khan Productions. In the film, Kareena Kapoor, Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya all play significant roles.
