100 days for L2 Empuraan release: Reasons why we are excited about Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran's movie

L2 Empuraan: As we countdown to the much-awaited sequel, we list down the reasons that have got us excited about the Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran movie.

Prithviraj Sukumaran stomped his authority as a director when his maiden directorial venture Lucifer with Mohanlal premiered in theatres across Kerala way back in 2019. Now almost six years later, the actor-filmmaker is back with the sequel L2 Empuraan which will have Mohanlal back as Stephen Nedumpally. L2 Empuraan is set to release on March 27, 2025. We are 100 days (99 to be precise) away from the grand release, and as we countdown to the much-awaited sequel we list down the reasons that have got us excited about the Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran movie.

Why we are eager to watch L2 Empuraan?

Sequel to Lucifer

The 2019 political action thriller, Lucifer, delved into the power struggles and political maneuverings after the death of PK Ramdas (PKR), Chief Minister. As his son-in-law Bobby (Vivek Oberoi) tries to use the political vacuum in the state for his discreet drug dealings, he meets strong opposition from Stephen Nedumpally (Mohanlal). Bobby’s wife Priyadarshini (Manju Warrier) and her brother Jathin (Tovino Thomas) all become entangled as the complex narrative unfolds. The film ended on a high note revealing a different avatar of Mohanlal and we are eager to know how L2 Empuraan is going to weave in all these plot points that range from an Interpol probe to the political turmoil in the state of Kerala.

Who is Stephen Nedumpally aka Abr’Raam Khureshi?

Mohanlal was once again stellar as Stephen Nedumpally, the trusted aide of PKR, who will go to any extent for his loved ones. But who is this white-mundu-and-white-shirt-clad person and how is he related to PKR? PKR had told his daughter that when she has absolutely no one to support her, she can turn to Stephen. Is he related to PKR? Lucifer ends with Stephen in an uber-cool avatar, dressed in a black suit and glasses. Not just that, Mohanlal announces that he is Abr’Raam Khureshi. How did Stephen become Abr’Raam Khureshi and what is his origin story?

More characters

Lucifer has a massive star cast, including notable names such as Indrajith Sukumaran, Sai Kumar, Baiju Santhosh, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Fazil, Saniya Iyappan, and Nyla Usha, among others. Even Bollywood actor Shakti Kapoor makes an appearance at the end of Lucifer. Will he have more role in the sequel?

Apart from direction, Prithviraj is also seen as Zayed Masood in Lucifer. Though we know he is a loyal aide to Stephen, ready to risk anything for him, we don’t know their connection either. We expect L2 Empuraan will give us more clarity on this.

Terrific plot, action sequences

One of the reasons that made Lucifer a blockbuster hit was the gripping plot packed with unexpected twists. Betrayals and switching sides among key players were crucial to the plot development, and a scene involving Baiju and Kalabhavan Shajon is still celebrated on YouTube. L2 Empuraan is expected to continue with the engaging story abound with action sequences. Lucifer had enough scenes where both Mohanlal and Prithviraj had to flex their muscles quite a bit. Now, with Stephen ditching his white politician look for the all-black Abr’Raam Khureshi avatar, we expect that action sequences too will be dialed up by several notches.

And finally, it is the terrific combination of Mohanlal and Prithviraj that made us look over the plot issues that Lucifer inevitably had. Lucifer marked their maiden collaboration, while the stars were seen in the comedy-drama Bro Daddy as a father-son duo. L2 Empuraan marks their third major collaboration, and the third movie to be directed by Prithviraj after Lucifer and Bro Daddy.
