L2 Empuraan: No IMAX release for Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s film; find out why

L2 Empuraan, the upcoming Mohanlal starrer is gearing up for a March 2025 release. Director Prithviraj Sukumaran recently dropped major updates on the release plans.

L2 Empuraan, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019-released blockbuster Lucifer, is one of the most anticipated Malayalam films of 2025. The action-packed entertainer marks the third onscreen collaboration of Mohanlal and actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran. The long-awaited L2 Empuraan teaser is slated to be out on January 26, 2025. Meanwhile, director Prithviraj dropped major hints on the release plans for L2 Empuraan and confirmed that Mohanlal’s film is not getting an IMAX release.

L2 Empuraan is not getting an IMAX release

Prithviraj Sukumaran, who recently had an interaction with his fans on X (formerly Twitter), made some interesting revelations on the L2 Empuraan release. When a follower asked, if the team is planning to have a flat ratio version for Empuraan for both EPIQ and IMAX, the actor-filmmaker opened up about the plans. “#L2E Empuraan was not shot with full format lenses. I’d like to stick to anamorphics and 1: 2.8 aspect ratio for all 3 films of this franchise,” wrote Prithviraj Sukumaran in his post.

From the actor-director's post, it is confirmed that the upcoming Mohanlal starrer is shot in the same aspect ratio as its prequel Lucifer, which makes it not suitable for the IMAX release. Prithviraj Sukumaran’s post also revealed that the upcoming third installment in the franchise will also follow the same format. In that case, the third part might also skip the IMAX release and will get released only in the other format screens. However, it has been confirmed that L2 Empuraan will get a massive global release with a record number of screens.

L2 Empuraan star cast

Mohanlal is returning to play the role of Stephen Nedumpally aka Khureshi Abraam in the film, while Prithviraj Sukumaran, Indrajith Sukumaran, Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, Sai Kumar, Nandu, Baiju Santhosh, Saniya Iyappan, and others will reprise their respective characters from Lucifer. Suraj Venjaramooodu, Shine Tom Chacko, Sharaf U Dheen, Tamil actor Arjun Das, Mani Kuttan, Karthikeya Dev, Caroline Koziol, Eriq Ebouaney, and others have reportedly joined the project as new cast members.
