Way back in 2019, when Prithviraj Sukumaran made a confident debut with Lucifer, Tovino Thomas was beginning to establish himself as a bankable star. But cut to 2025, Tovino is a celebrated Malayalam star with hit films to his name. Did Tovino’s growing stardom have an impact on his role of Jathin Ramdas in L2 Empuraan? Murali Gopy, who is the writer of both Lucifer and L2 Empuraan, replies in the negative and explains why.

In a recent interview with Asianet News, Murali Gopy was asked if Tovino Thomas' stardom proved to be a hurdle in the development of his character Jathin Ramdas in Empuraan.

“Not at all,” replied the noted writer while explaining that Lucifer is a work with continuity. While pointing out that the Lucifer franchise has three parts, Murali Gopy said, “We have already fixed the character’s development in our minds and that continuation will be there in the second and third parts."

“Not just Tovino’s, we have not devised any of the characters based on star status. This is a content-heavy film," explained Murali Gopy, who has also penned several notable movies such as Left Right Left.

Tovino Thomas in Lucifer

For those of you who have not seen Lucifer, Tovino Thomas plays Jathin Ramdas, the son of PK Ramdas. The 2019 film follows the events after CM PK Ramdas’ death and Jathin returns to the state to contest in the elections. Tovino’s dialogue of ‘Mundu udukkanum ariyam… venel madakki kuthanum ariyam!’ was an instant hit with the audiences.

In Empuraan too, Tovino will return as Jathin Ramdas. It remains to be seen how his character will develop in the second part of the Lucifer franchise. Fan theories about his character arc are already doing the rounds on the internet.

Meanwhile, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s L2 Empuraan will make its big worldwide release on March 27, 2025. Mohanlal will be back in the role of Stephen Nedumpally aka Khureshi-Abraam along with Prithviraj, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, and Indrajith Sukumaran.
