The movie, which hit theatres across the world in November 12, has Dulquer in the titular role
For those who have watched Dulquer Salmaan’s big budget film Kurup, the news of its sequel would be no surprise with the makers hinting as much with the tail-end portion of the thriller, directed by Srinath Rajendran. But with the filmmaker reportedly confirming a sequel has been planned during a recent Facebook interaction, it is sure to hype up the film inspired by one of India’s most wanted fugitives, Sukumara Kurup.
In a recent interaction, the Second Show director had apparently said that a sequel is indeed planned but it would take some time to materialize. Srinath had dedicated close to seven years to bring Kurup on screen, being involved in its research and scripting process.
The movie ended with a Lucifer-like tail-end portion promising more surprises, if the sequel does get made. Kurup, meanwhile, has rewritten several box office records since its opening on November 12.
The film has grossed over Rs 15 Cr from Kerala theatres in its first three days, making it one of the fastest to cross the landmark in Mollywood history. That it achieved this feat with just 50% capacity in theatres would be heartening to theatre exhibitors who had been facing huge losses due to the shutting down of cinema halls during the pandemic lockdowns.
Kurup, which is spans from the 1960s to 2000s, tells the story of Gopikrishna Kurup played by Dulquer, who is on the run after he and his accomplices murder Charlie so that the former can fake his death to claim his insurance money. However, there’s more to that story once we get to hear Kurup’s version of the tale that involves murder, betrayal, mystery and romance.
The movie also has Shine Tom Chacko, Sobhita Dhulipala, Indrajith Sukumaran, Surabhi Lakshmi, Bharath and Sunny Wayne.
