Koffee With Karan Season 8 Episode 4 Review:
Wearing a pristine white top with balloon sleeves and a black skirt, Kareena Kapoor Khan signified having a no-grey outlook in her monochrome look. On the other hand, Alia Bhatt dressed in a sequined outfit, which was heavy on shimmer but made her look dull overall. On top of that, she had almost 'no makeup' makeup, revealing a more raw look. Well, that also gave a hint as to how her approach would be on the show.
Calling Kareena his "soulmate" and Alia his "firstborn", Karan Johar introduced both prolific actors to his couch. Both of them are sisters-in-law and know a great deal about each other. The episode takes a nose-dive into what Alia has been speaking about in other interviews. What looked like clarification came as a reaction from the actor to trolls. Well, the Reddit forum is definitely one of the tabs on her phone, and she also anticipated that whatever she said would make it there. Alia reacted to Ranbir Kapoor being called a "toxic" husband (owing to the infamous lipstick "wipe it off" remark) and about him not being a hands-on father, but she doesn't need to deny the claims. Her words this time prompted her to speak louder than her previous claims; the impact is yet to be calculated.
To cover it up, she spoke about her "sunshine", daughter Raha, and while she goes on a monologue about it, in no time, KJo jumps in and cuts her off to shift the attention to Kareena. The latter, with her constant reactive eyes and shrugging of her shoulders, began her every answer with "ya" and then went on to speak about her kids, Taimur Ali Khan and Jeh Ali Khan. Karan interrupted her once more as she was doing so, possibly believing that Kareena and her children's increased attention from the paparazzi had been discussed on the show.
Although Karan claimed that he looked down on people asking women about working after getting married and embracing parenthood at a certain age, he did get on the subject of competitive spirit in business. Due to this, one is taken back two decades to the alleged catfight between Kareena and Ameesha Patel. The topic did look uncomfortable, with Bebo even asking Karan if she should congratulate the team of Gadar 2 now on the couch. However, in no time, they moved on to another topic.
This episode felt more like the Friends episode, in which Monica Geller prompts Phoebe Buffay to keep on shifting topics during her wedding rehearsal dinner until she breaks down and starts screaming. Well, no one screamed, and it felt like a saved-by-the-bell moment.
Even though the episode was not candid, the gestures of the guests did make me laugh in many instances, which is a good thing. It's not Koffee With Karan if you're not watching it with 'judgey' eyes as a viewer.
Alia's continuous chiming in by saying "not that anyone asked me" was hilarious and it felt like she had a lot of opinions but couldn't express them for fear of getting the wrong attention. Moreover, her claims of liking Kareena's early 2000s films, especially Khushi brought back the guilty pleasure of 90s kids. Well, who doesn't enjoy watching the mutual admiration society between two stupendous actors? The best thing is that it felt real.
Kareena's facial expressions said it all: "What's happening?" And she was getting bored in no time. More so, the actor even told Karan about her previous outing on the show and that he bored her then as well. She is a natural actor and her gestures are truly entertaining, which actually breaks the awkwardness that creeps in some way or another.
Every episode of Koffee With Karan Season 8 has a new game apart from Rapid Fire, and in this episode, it was a 'vibe check' poll conducted by the team to see how Kareena and Alia react to certain situations. That game resulted in certain anecdotes and was quite refreshing.
Even the Rapid Fire was fun and Kareena excelled gracefully. If only Alia had two better questions than asking her if she was the best in the country. Last season was a reality check, when Karan was constantly called out for taking Alia's name in every episode in such a way that she was the best in the country. The actor even said that she has banned him from doing so. Thus, asking her if she is actually the "best" felt unnecessary after the first time.
As a viewer, it feels like every time two celebrities have different sets of questions, one set is always better than the other.
Moreover, for the questions Alia was asked, Karan even asked Kareena to know her reaction. Interestingly, both of them brushed aside the topic of Deepika Padukone as their competition by getting into the seniority game. Well, well, well!
But I would still say that expectations from the episode were largely met, and this was indeed a better episode than the last two. Karan Johar getting roasted also helped!
Koffee With Karan Season 8 Episode 4 Verdict:
Kareena Kapoor Khan and Alia Bhatt brought sass, humour, and genuine moments to the couch, and they shone. Now, we're hoping for onscreen camaraderie soon!
