Koel Mallick explains why theatres are more ‘magical’ than OTTs

The actress talked about her fitness, how motherhood changed her and about her previous film in a recent interview,

Koel Mallick has been a star performer of the Bengali movie industry for the last two decades. Starting off her career in 2003, she has managed to give multiple note-worthy performances and create a permanent place in the hearts of the audience.

Two of her films Rawkto Rawhoshyo and Flyover hit the theatres last year in spite of the pandemic, and performed commendably. Koel told Calcutta Times that she is grateful to her fans who went to the theatres, given the tough circumstances, and made her movies successful. It was also a testimony to the fact how people were tired of being cooped up in their homes for months, and thus going to the theatres like pre-pandemic times, was a welcoming change, she said.

With her son Kabir turning a year old, Koel has managed to maintain a perfect work-life balance as well as following a healthy fitness regime. She elaborated how even though she goes to places for her work commitments, a part of her mind is always with Kabir, thinking whether he is all right or not.

Motherhood has brought about a big change in her life, specifically her thinking, she divulged. Keeping her private and professional life mutually exclusive is a choice she has taken, and it has been the same with Kabir, the actress said. She believes that at such a tender age, Kabir has special moments, which are too precious to be shared on social media. Right now, he is enjoying communicating with his parents, listening to rhymes and guess what, his food habits are just like Koel’s, she said.

She went on to explain how the secret to her fitness is nothing secretive at all. Eating well, balanced nutritious food and staying active and fit, does the trick for her. However, mental health is of utmost importance as surviving these turbulent times is pivotal. With many of her co-stars moving to politics, Koel has chosen to stick to her acting profession, as she feels politics is not her cup of tea, and managing the responsibility that comes with it is too much.

On being enquired whether the audience will ever get lucky to witness the magic of Koel-Dev and Koel-Jeet partnership on screen again, she promised that given the right script, never say never. She also revealed that the sequel of Mitin Mashi will happen sooner than later. When asked about her upcoming project, Bony, a sci-fi thriller with Parambrata Chatterjee, she clarified that they will definitely opt for a theatrical release. Without giving away much, she mentioned that Bony revolves around a unique child and her mother, and will be a treat to viewers.

While acknowledging the great work being done on OTT platforms, Koel emphasised how nothing can replace the magic of the big screen. “For average Indians, it is an escape from reality for those few hours - that magic when the auditorium goes dark and the screen comes alive - and then there is nothing between you and the big screen, and everything is just magical,” she said, adding that people will go back to watch their favourite stars on the big screen when everything returns to normal.
