KK dies at 53: Shreya Ghoshal to Shankar Mahadevan, singers across India express grief over his untimely demise

The untimely demise of singer and music director Krishnakumar Kunnath, who is popularly known was KK, on Tuesday in Kolkata has sent shockwaves across the music industry. The 53-year-old, who is known for his hits such as Pal, Yaaron, Tadap Tadap, Dus Bahane, Pal and Khuda Jaane, was in the city to perform for a two-day concert.

Despite feeling unwell, according to reports, the singer performed till the end of the event at Nazrul Mancha on Tuesday. He was taken to his hotel where his health deteriorated further and he was brought dead to the CMRI hospital at 10pm, as per reports.

His debut album Pal in 1999 had catapulted him to fame and into the hearts of listeners. KK went on to record songs in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi and Malayalam in his career, spanning several chart busters.

Singers from across the country, who have collaborated with the versatile musician or have been his fans in the past two decades, took to their social media accounts to share their grief and condole the sudden demise of the talented singer.

“This is too hard to accept! Heart is shattered in pieces,” wrote Shreya Ghoshal, who was reportedly informed of KK’s demise during a concert in Indore where she was paying tribute Bappi Lahiri and Lata Mangeshkar. Shreya and KK had sung several popular tracks together including Abhi Abhi from Randeep Hooda’s Jism.

Composer and singer Shankar Mahadevan quoted a line from KK’s song Pal in his tweet tribute. “Hum rahe y ana rahen yaad aayenge ye pal,” he wrote. His sentiment was echoed by singer Mohit Chauhan, who posted a photo of the last time he and KK had announced a tour together. “A brother is gone,” he tweeted.

Tamil composers Yuvan Shankar Raja and Harris Jayaraj for whom KK had rendered the tracks Kadhal Valarthen from Manmadhan and Uyirin Uyire from Kaakha Kaakha, respectively, also posted tributes.

The Delhi-born singer is survived by wife and two children.
