Kiran Rao is ‘hurt’ and ‘bothered’ when films with regressive messages earns crores
Filmmaker Kiran Rao is making a comeback 13 years after Dhobi Ghat with Laapataa Ladies

After the 2010 film Dhobi Ghat, which was her debut film, filmmaker Kiran Rao is back to direction with Laapataa Ladies. Kiran is currently in Toronto for the world premiere of Laapataa Ladies and spoke about her dislike for regressive messages in Indian blockbuster films.

“I suppose all filmmakers set out to make good films; the intention is often great. But a lot has changed in terms of the market. There are several options for audiences and makers are trying to grab attention from everyone. When a film with a really regressive message makes hundreds of crores, it really hurts. Because the makers had the opportunity to push the needle in some direction but didn't. Those are the things that sometimes bother me,” Kiran told Film Companion in an interview.
‘It would be great if blockbuster films had better messages’
She added that she understands the dynamics of markets and the intention behind making blockbuster films, but that she would like such films to do the important work of building the society in a better way by opening up conversations and breaking stereotypes. “I am not saying that all big films are not good, but it would be great if we had more successful films with better messaging. Having said that, films are not necessarily for social change,” Kiran said.
