Fans of the Korean period zombie drama Kingdom, which is streaming on Netflix, woke up to a surprise on June 4, with the makers announcing that there will be a special episode tying the second and third season of the show.
The episode titled Kingdom: Ashin of the North will be releasing on July 23 and will follow the story of the mysterious woman Ashin, played by actress Jun Ji-hyun, who was introduced in the final scene of the second season.
The plot of the episode is set in the Northern Korean peninsula and would revolve around Ashin, who is a warrior, and also the resurrection plant that brings back the dead, according to a report on What’s On Netflix.
On the special episode before season 3, the makers of the series had revealed that they thought it was important to reveal the origins of the resurrection plant as well as tell a story set in another kingdom to expand the scope of the upcoming instalment.
Another reason, however, could be that with the pandemic stalling the shoot of season 3, the upcoming episode would provide fodder to keep the fans happy. The filming of the special episode had been kept a secret till Netflix made the announcement today.
Apart from Jun, Park Byung-eun will be reprising his role as the royal commander from the earlier seasons of Kingdom, which are available for streaming on Netflix. The premier date of season 3 is yet to be announced.
