Jakes Bejoy’s background score for the period gangster flick has been garnering much praise after King of Kotha released in theatres on August 24
Onam releases tend to have a massive buzz around them and this year, the first to hit screens is Dulquer Salmaan’s much-awaited period gangster flick King of Kotha, which marks the directorial debut of Abhilash Joshiy, the son of veteran director Joshiy. King of Kotha is in theatres in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu today and the initial response after the first show have been immensely encouraging. The film is expected to break the opening day record set by Superstar Rajinikanth’s Jailer earlier this month .
According to reports, King of Kotha is about how a police officer brings a former gangster back to take on the current ‘king’ of Kotha. Dulquer, in the lead role, is undoubtedly the highlight of the film; that is the gist of what we’ve been seeing on social media. “A one-man show by Dulquer,” is one of the most common remarks seen about the film, with pretty much everyone agreeing that King of Kotha will, undoubtedly, be the Onam blockbuster of the year. Gokul Suresh, the son of veteran actor Suresh Gopi has also been getting a lot of praise for his role, as also music man Jakes Bejoy for his ‘psych’ background score. Some have pointed out a few drawbacks too, citing that while the story and screenplay may feel routine, the film’s biggest issue is its run-time at a tad under 3 hours. “It’s predictable, but engaging,” was another commonly seen comment
King of Kotha, produced by Dulquer’s Wayfarer Films and Zee Studios, has released in 2,500+ screens in over 50 countries making it the widest release for a Malayalam film. Reports suggest that the film was made at a budget of approx. Rs 50 crore. The digital rights of the film have been picked up by Disney+Hotstar, while the satellite rights rest with Asianet.
