Dulquer Salmaan-starrer King of Kotha is expected to lead the race among this year’s Onam releases that also includes movies of Nivin Pauly and Shane Nigam
Dulquer Salmaan-starrer King of Kotha’s trailer, which released on August 10 amid much fanfare, has already surpassed a major record set by Yash’s KGF: Chapter 2, which is the fourth highest grossing film in Kerala after 2018, Pulimurugan and Baahubali 2.
The trailer of the Abhilash Joshiy directorial, which introduced Dulquer’s character Raju, the fictional world of Kotha and its residents, has already surpassed the record for the most viewed Malayalam trailer – held by the Malayalam version of KGF: Chapter 2 that raked in 7.3 million eyeballs in 24 hours.
King of Kotha becomes most-viewed Malayalam trailer
Dulquer’s gangster-actioner, which also has Chemban Vinod Jose, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Shammi Thilakan in pivotal roles, broke KGF: Chapter 2’s record by gaining 7.5 million views in just 7 hours and ended with a total of 13 million views in 24 hours. Can King of Kotha eclipse KGF 2’s box office record?
King of Kotha, which is set in the 80s and 90s, is already touted to be the movie that will break the record set by Tovino Thomas and Asif Ali’s 2018: Everyone Is A Hero of being the highest-ever grossing Malayalam film. The Jude Anthany Joseph directorial, which is currently streaming on Sony LIV, had a worldwide box office gross just shy of Rs 180 crore and did an overall business of Rs 200 crore.
Considering that King of Kotha is expected to do great opening-week business due to Dulquer’s fanbase and it being a festive release, the film could also eclipse KGF: Chapter 2’s box office record in Kerala by becoming the fastest to reach Rs 50 crore in the state. The Yash-starrer achieved the milestone in 10 days.
Dulquer’s King of Kotha to challenge Jailer’s supremacy

The Rajinikanth-starrer, on Friday, became the highest opening-day grosser in Kerala, taking in a sum of Rs 5.85 crore. Vijay’s Varisu is the second in the list, followed by Ponniyin Selvan: II, Varisu and Pathaan.
