Kill, Marco

Lakshya and Raghav Juyal unleashed violence on the big screens in 2024 with Kill, which was one of the most violent films to hit theatres. Just when we thought that we had seen enough blood and gore for a long time, here comes Unni Mukundan with his brutal Marco.

The competition seems to be between who can portray more violence on screen, stirring up debates and discussions on how much violence is ‘ok’ to be on the screen and whether it influences people. Marco’s leading man Unni Mukundan, who has risen to the status of an action superstar after the brutal actioner, is of the opinion that the movie is 'unlikely to influence anyone to go on a killing spree'. In a different interview, Kill co-producer Guneet Monga also spoke about the violence in Lakshya and Raghav Juyal’s actioner. Let’s look into what both the actor and producer said about the violence depicted in their movies.

Unni Mukundan on violence in Marco

Defending the brutal acts of violence in the Haneef Adeni directorial, Unni Mukundan in an interview with India Today said that he wouldn’t want to take the intelligence of the audience for granted. “I know it’s a film, it’s for entertainment purposes. It will definitely not influence a person to go about on a killing spree."

Standing resolutely by his statement, Unni said that he had heard that people had a ‘tough time watching’ but nothing more.

Unni Mukundan stars in the lead role of Marco, who goes out on a bloody rampage after a loved one is killed. The Malayalam film with its stomach-churning scenes of violence, however, is turning out to be a winner at the box office, even outside Kerala.

Citing examples of the Yash-starrer KGF, Unni sought to know what happened after the Kannada action film was released. “What we got was KGF 2 and a bigger hit and a beautiful film,” he remarked, adding that Marco 2 will also be out and needless to say, along the same brutal lines.

Guneet Monga on violence in Kill

Guneet Monga, who shot to global fame after her documentary The Elephant Whisperers won an Academy Award, is one of the co-producers of Kill. In an interview with Faye D'Souza, she spoke about the violence in her film.

While stating that action and killings are happening in the film, Guneet Monga said, "So we didn't glorify any of the blood scenes. There was no slow-motion of blood, there was no celebration of violence.”

Guneet said that credit should be given to Kill director Nikhil Nagesh Bhat on how the violence was portrayed in the film, which fell in the extreme action genre. Kill, which is also backed by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, follows the events after a train is hijacked by dacoits. Despite not having any A-listers from Bollywood in its cast, the movie garnered much attention.

Another Hindi film that stirred up heated debates in India was Ranbir Kapoor's Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. While stating that she did not agree with the choice of story due to misogyny, Guneet, said that she liked the action sequences in the film.

As these movies rake in profits and with sequels on the way, we can expect more violence and gore on the silver screen in the years to come.
