Khufiya is set for its Netflix premiere on October 5, 2023.
In just four days, Vishal Bhardwaj's espionage thriller Khufiya is set for its Netflix premiere. Amar Bhushan, a former head of R&AW's Counter Espionage Unit, wrote the book Escape to Nowhere on which the movie is based. With Khufiya, the ace filmmaker-musician, reunites with his favourite actor Tabu, and the film also features Ali Fazal and Wamiqa Gabbi in the lead roles. Ashish Vidyarthi and Azmeri Haque Badhon are also starring in supporting roles in the film.
A tale of espionage and revenge:
In Khufiya an unyielding agent (Tabu) seeks revenge for the death of a fellow agent by tracking down the mole (Ali Fazal), who was responsible for the killing of the undercover spy.
In the book Escape to Nowhere an anonymous informant visits the office of Jeevnathan, chief of the security division of the agency's External Intelligence Service, to convey his concerns about a senior colleague's possible involvement in espionage. They immediately begin their investigation, and the prime suspect, Ravi, is subjected to intensive monitoring. Subsequently, the inquiry produces a mountain of evidence suggesting the suspect stole confidential information. Investigators argue angrily over whether to let the suspect go free or physically force him to confess as panic spreads.
Book vs Film:
It's interesting that Vishal changed the book's main character from being a male to being a female, Krishna Mehra, only to cast Tabu as the lead.
Meanwhile, in a statement talking about the film, the filmmaker earlier said that he has always been really fascinated with the world of espionage, and Vishal is truly delighted to explore this genre with Khufiya. He was able to reteam with Tabu and meet and work with two fantastic performers, Ali Fazal and Wamiqa Gabbi, in this film. This is also his first creative project in conjunction with Netflix, and it's been a lot of fun.
Tabu's character:
Meanwhile, Tabu stars as a stoic R&AW agent who puts her duty to her country and her career above all else in this film. Her character is complex and multifaceted because it includes not just the diligent agent she is but also a loving mother and a committed lover.
Tabu remarked of her role in the movie that she has had a long relationship with this film; the actor was one of the first ones to be cast. Playing a complex character is a rewarding challenge every time for her. Tabu further said that Krishna Mehra is an interesting and hardworking woman; her work, her profession, and her feeling of duty are all quite important to her. She is fiery, independent, and a powerful individual. However, she is fragile and conflicted by her loyalty to her country and her desire to focus on her personal life. Although she is extremely hard-working, Krishna's softer side shines through in her relationships with her partner and her kid. This, Tabu believes, exemplifies the multifaceted nature of her character.
Khufiya is slated to premiere on Netflix on October 5, 2023.
