Karthik Subbaraj reveals Suriya 44 release plans, says not a gangster film but..

Actor Suriya is teaming up with director Karthik Subbaraj for a film tentatively titled Suriya 44, which is a love story with lots of action, a departure from Subbaraj's usual gangster films

Actor Suriya is working alongside director Karthik Subbaraj for a film tentatively titled Suriya 44. The film is currently in works and marks the first time the duo is collaborating. Karthik Subbaraj opened up about the project and spilled some beans on the genre, and the release plans for Suriya 44.

Suriya 44 will be a love story

Karthik Subbaraj who is known to make gangster films like Jigarthanda, Jigarthanda Double X, Mahaan and Jagame Thandhiram, is now working with actor Suriya in Suriya 44. While not much about the project is out, the film features actor Pooja Hegde in the female lead. Spilling beans on the project, the filmmaker said, "People assume that my films are based on gangsters. But Suriya 44 is a love story, with lots of action. I wanted to do a love story for a long time. It is not a gangster story.”

Karthik Subbaraj also revealed that he has long admired Suriya, and had even pitched the film even before the release of Jigarthanda Double X. Praising Suriya for his professionalism, the filmmaker said that it was excited to shoot with the actor.

When asked about the release, Karthik Subbaraj revealed that they have vaguely planned the release for summer 2025, and they are looking to dedicate time for post-production works. However, a release date has not yet been decided, the director added.

Suriya, who is currently awaiting the release of Kanguva, has done several cameo appearances recently in films like Vikram, Sarfira and Rocketry: The Nambi Effect. It is to be noted that Suriya was last seen in full-fledged role in the 2022 film Etharkkum Thunindhavan. The film is available on SunNXT and OTTplay Premium. Directed by Pandiraj, the film is an action thriller and also stars Vinay Rai, Priyanka Mohan and others.

Etharkkum Thunindhavan is about a lawyer who exposes a pornography racket in his village, run by an influential heir. The film is backed by Sun Pictures.
