Karan Johar also criticised the film’s screenplay and added that the film did not offer its stars 'any scope for performances’.
Karan Johar’s Student of the Year(SOTY) launched the careers of three popular names in Bollywood today- Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan. Almost a decade after the film, Karan does not seem to hold his own film in high regard. The filmmaker recently took shots at his own movie during the latest episode of Koffee With Karan 7.
The episode saw SOTY star Sidharth grace the couch with Vicky Kaushal. The latter discussed a particular scene from the film’s song Kukkad, which involved a scene where Sidharth pours water over himself. Vicky spoke of how a lot of women he knew ‘went nuts’ over the scene, and Sidarth recalled how he was ‘starving’ in that shot.
This led Karan to remark “What do you think Student of The Year was about? The screenplay? There was no screenplay. There was no scene and no scope for performance”.
Karan went on taking digs at his own film, saying that none of the actors had won any awards for their debut performances. When Sidharth tried to defend the films talking about the characters’ arcs and the depth of the characters, Karan doubled down and asked the actor “Which depth you had in the character? Which film are you talking about?”.
The filmmaker said that he had to come down to the ‘brass tacks’ for SOTY, as it was the only way to get people to see the film. He recalled a moment where, four days into filming the movie, he had decided to go through the entire script, which made him ask himself why he was even doing the film.
“Eventually what we shot was very different from what the written material was. I didn't know what I was doing. I think I was drunk or something. I started shooting the film and was like, why is the script so bad?”. But Karan admitted that the film was a fun and entertaining watch.
