The filmmaker revealed that he had quite an awkward experience while shooting the song Suraj Hua Maddham from the film, which starred Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G) are arguably two films that aided in putting Bollywood director Karan Johar’s career on the map. While the success of the latter was hugely celebrated, Karan had a few embarrassing moments on K3G’s sets. The filmmaker revealed that he was caught in an awkward situation while shooting the popular song Suraj Hua Maddham from the 2001 film.
While serving as a judge on the reality show, Hunarbaaz: Desh Ki Shaan, the director talked about an incident where he had a stomach upset on the film’s sets, and there wasn’t a bathroom in sight. In his desperation, Karan had decided to go behind a big limestone statue that was nearby. But he had been spotted by a Hollywood crew of about 20 people who were scouting for locations. Just as they were about to take out their cameras, Karan had to convince them that he was also a director and his film’s shoot was going on.
The filmmaker elaborated on the incident during an appearance on Social Media Star With Janice, along with Prajakta Koli. Calling the song’s location “beautiful”, Karan talked about how they had filmed the song sequence in a location in Egypt that had limestone statues stretching as far as the eyes could see. He said that when he got the ‘loosies’, he had chosen one of the biggest statues he could find. But despite his best efforts he was caught in an awkward situation when “a whole army” (the Hollywood film crew), came his way.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham marked Karan’s second directorial venture after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor, the film is available to stream on Netflix. Karan’s next directorial awaiting release is Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
