Karan Johar opens up about dad Yash Johar: Never made me feel like I was different from anybody else

On more than one occasion Karan Johar has opened up about the close bond he shared with his late father, Yash Johar. The filmmaker recently spoke of how his late father had never made the former feel like he was ‘different’, and recalled a delightful moment from his childhood.

In conversation with Bollywood Bubble, Karan spoke of how open minded and progressive Yash was, calling the latter a man with a ‘big heart’. “He never ever made me feel like I was different from anybody else”, said Karan.

The filmmaker recounted a moment from his childhood, when he had gone to see the 1979 film Sargam, which starred Jaya Prada and Rishi Kapoor. Karan was eight years old at the time and had been impressed by the song Dafliwale Dafli Baja, even dancing to the tune when he got home. Karan says that his dance routines had made Yash ‘proud’, and the latter used to make Karan do the dance in front of friends as well.

Karan said that Yash had never found it strange that the former loved to dance to Jaya Prada’s songs. The filmmaker added that he hoped Yash would be proud of him “wherever he is today”. Yash Johar had founded Dharma Productions in 1976. Yash died in 2004, after which the banner was taken over by Karan.

On the work side, Karan returned as host of the seventh season of Koffee With Karan. The series, streaming on Disney+Hotstar, will have Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, Kriti Sanon, Sara Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor and more as guests this season. Karan is also gearing up for the release of his upcoming directorial Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, which stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead. Karan’s upcoming productions as a producer include Brahmastra, Liger, Govinda Naam Mera and more.
