The Hindi version of Rishab Shetty’s blockbuster Kantara opened in theatres yesterday. Two direct Hindi movies – Doctor G and Code Name Tiranga – also came out on the same day. Doctor G was the clear frontrunner in the Hindi belt, clocking Rs 3.87 crore at the box office. While Rishab’s film had a relatively slower start, it still managed a healthy Rs 1. 27 crore.

Occupancy for Kantara’s Hindi version was best in the Bengaluru region, where the Friday night shows accounted for 42% occupancy. Morning shows across the country barely crossed double digit occupancy, but footfalls increased everywhere as the day wore on. Estimates suggest that the weekend will be better for Kantara, with Day 2 expected to have a 30-40% increase over Friday’s collections.

The Kannada version of the film, meanwhile, continues to be the main draw across the country. By the second weekend itself, it had gone on to become the highest grossing Kannada film in north India, a record it replicated in the US and other parts of the globe too. After 15 days at the box office, the film is estimated to have grossed just a tad over Rs 100 crore. Fans and industry experts reckon that it has the potential to cross the lifetime collection of KGF: Chapter 1’s Kannada version.

Now, with the Hindi, Telugu and Tamil dubbed versions out, and with Malayalam and Tulu in the pipeline, it is also believed that Kantara will surpass the lifetime collections of films like James, Vikrant Rona and 777 Charlie, among others.

Produced by Hombale Films, Kantara deals with a man vs man and a man vs nature conflict. Rishab is joined by actors like Kishore, Pramod Shetty, Prakash Tumminad, Sapthami Gowda, among others. The B Ajaneesh Loknath musical has been sold to Amazon Prime Video, where it is expected to drop by the first week of November.
