Although the daily collections have dropped significantly over the past few days, the weekend numbers are still quite credible and the makers would want to leverage that to the maximum before the film premieres on OTT
Kantara has successfully completed 50 days in theatres and still looks in no mood to stop. Rishab Shetty's film is running on more than 1000 screens across the world and reportedly, is only the second Kannada film in history to complete 50 days of its theatrical run in the USA. The film, much against the initial estimates, is faring quite well in the United States of America in four different languages (Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu).
In the same vein, Kantara is also managing to hold its ground at the box office despite the consistent influx of releases. Be it the original Kannada film or the Hindi and Telugu dubbed versions, Kantara has encountered stiff competition from several major releases over the past 50 days but the film has proven its worth regardless. Considering that the months of October and November have seen films like Vikram Vedha (Hindi), Ponniyin Selvan 1 (Tamil), God Father (Telugu), Ram Setu (Hindi), Head Bush (Kannada), and Gandhada Gudi (Kannada), among others, hit the big screens, Kantara's theatrical performance is nothing short of extraordinary.
According to the latest trade reports, Kantara is all set to cross the Rs. 300 crores mark (net) at the domestic box office. The film has already grossed over Rs. 350 crores in India alone and approx. Rs. 32 crores overseas which take the total gross collections close to Rs. 385 crores. The Hombale Films production is now eyeing the Rs. 400 crores target and is likely to go past the figure in the next couple of days. Although the daily collections have dropped significantly over the past few days, the weekend numbers are still quite credible and the makers would want to leverage that to the maximum before the film premieres on OTT.
And all eyes are now set keenly on the digital release which, in all likeliness, will occur on the 24th of November on Amazon Prime Video. Kantara's OTT release date has been a subject of a lot of scrutiny and tabloid reports too have thrown up myriad reasons for the delay: from the makers not wishing to hamper the superb theatrical run to the due Varaha Roopam plagiarism negotiations (with Thaikkudam Bridge), speculations have been rife throughout. Regardless of the reason, Kantara has adhered to the pattern of allowing an 8-week gap between theatrical and OTT releases like RRR, Brahmastra, and other successful films.
Team Kantara would also hope that the film surpasses the box office records set by KGF 2 in Karnataka. The Prashanth Neel is currently the highest-grossing film in its home state but is ahead of Kantara only by a small margin which, by all means, can be covered before the prospective OTT release on November 24.
