Although the Rishab Shetty film opened in theatres on a modest note, the positive word-of-mouth publicity will certainly help Kantara gain traction at the box office. The film has been produced by Hombale Films.
Rishab Shetty's Kantara has opened in cinema halls to rave critical reviews with the audiences too showering praise on the actor-director's latest offering. Although Kantara began its theatrical run on September 30 with stiff competition and had a modest first few hours at the box office, the positive word-of-mouth publicity is now ensuring that the film gains traction.
As per the latest trade reports, Kantara closed the opening day with Rs. 3.5 crores in terms of net collections and is now looking solid to leverage the ultra-positive reception over the first weekend. Early trade estimates reveal that the Rishab Shetty film will collect over Rs. 5 crores on Day 2 (Saturday) though the numbers are likely to vary over the course of the day. The aforementioned figures are highly encouraging for the makers considering that Kantara, despite being a Hombale Films film, is NOT a pan-India release and is said to be a decent-sized film as far as the budget is concerned.
Kantara Twitter review: Netizens hail Rishab Shetty’s film as a masterpiece
Kantara will also face competition from the other two non-Kannada releases - Vikram Vedha and Ponniyin Selvan - 1 or PS-1 - and with both films featuring central casts and filmmakers of national reckoning, the Karnataka box office will be a split market. However, with Kantara being a rather unique portrait of the rich local culture, one could certainly expect the film to be the top pick of the lot for the Kannada cinema patrons.
Kantara's theatre occupancy too saw a significant jump over the course of the opening day with night shows in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Shivamogga, Kundapura, Manipal, etc. running almost full following the positive reviews. Bengaluru is quite easily the biggest playing ground for Kannada filmmakers but one can surely expect Rishab Shetty's film to do well in the Mangaluru, Kundapura, and other coastal regions.
Kantara has been written and directed by Rishab Shetty who also stars in the film as the main lead along with Kishore, Sapthami Gowda, and Achyuth Kumar. Vijay Kiragandur of Hombale Films produces the film with Arvind S. Kashyap and B. Ajaneesh Loknath handling cinematography and music respectively.
