Malayali audiences know that when Mammootty is in khaki, or for that matter, in the role of an investigative officer, it will be thrilling. The superstar, who turned 72 today, is set to return to cop mode with cinematographer-turned-director Roby Varghese Raj’s Kannur Squad, which, incidentally, is Mammootty’s third home production after Rorschach and Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam. The film, which has been co-scripted by Roby’s brother, Rony David Raj and Muhammad Shafi, is set to release in theatres on September 28, which was not the initial plan, but was changed around when Prabhas’ Salaar was advanced.

In the run-up to the release, the team revealed the trailer of the investigative thriller on the occasion of leading man Mammootty’s birthday. On the trail of a bunch of elusive criminals, Mammootty and his colleagues are under pressure from their superior officers to pack up and return. But the team has invested too much on the case and returning empty handed is not on the cards. They have to see it through, no matter what. How they go about it and what that does to them on the professional and personal front forms the crux of the narrative. The trailer also revealed that actor Kishore, whose cop act in Kantara was widely appreciated, has a pivotal role in the film as Mammootty’s superior officer.

The film also stars Rony David Raj, Anees Nedumangad, Deepak Parambol, and Shabareesh Varma and has Mammootty apparently playing a low-level police officer. He will, however, still be leading a group of cops tasked with capturing elusive criminals. Kannur Squad was extensively shot across locations in Kerala and Maharashtra, with Muhammed Rahil handling the cinematography and Sushin Shyam pitching in with the music. The film’s teaser was expected to be released in August, along with Dulquer Salmaan’s Onam release King of Kotha, but was not, eventually.
