Mammootty’s latest superhit Kannur Squad, which is helmed by Roby Varghese Raj, is currently streaming on OTT in five languages
The wait for the OTT release of Mammootty’s Kannur Squad is finally over. The Malayalam movie, which is Mammootty’s highest grossing film ever, dropped on a streaming platform on November 17 midnight.
The crime-thriller, which is helmed by Roby Varghese Raj, is now available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar in five languages – Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. Kannur Squad, which is based on true events, revolves around a group of cops, who are tasked with tracking and apprehending four criminals, who flee to North India after committing a brutal crime in Kasargod.
Why Mammootty’s Kannur Squad is a must-see film?
Apart from the movie being one of the highest-grossing Malayalam movies this year, the film is based on a special squad in Kerala police that was formed to solve difficult cases. The Kannur Squad, which was formed by former Kannur SP S Sreejith, consists of nine members in real life. The film, however, follows four of them – with Mammootty’s character George Martin serving as the leader of the group.
The movie’s action scenes – especially the one shot in a village named Tikri in North India – is one of the highlights of the film as it finds its protagonists surrounded by an unruly and murderous mob with flaming torches. Its director Roby has also ensured that the film is peppered with ‘mass’ sequences that play to the gallery while also keeping the investigation and the chase grounded.
Its scriptwriters, Rony David Raj and Muhammed Shafi, had discussed several cases of the real-life Kannur Squad before finalising on two that were used in the film. Through these investigations, the film also showcases the trials and tribulations of cops and the personal and professional challenges they have face.
Other movies like Kannur Squad to stream right now
The film’s director, in a recent interview with OTTplay, said that Kannur Squad drew comparisons with Karthi’s Theeran Adigaaram Ondru, which is currently streaming on aha, Disney+ Hotstar and MX Player, and Asif Ali’s Kuttavum Shikshayum, which is available on Netflix.
Like Kannur Squad, both the film revolved around cops from their respective States, travelling to North India in search of elusive criminals and the hurdles they face, when they are in unfamiliar terrain.
