Kannur Squad on OTT: All things you need to know about Mammootty's blockbuster cop drama

Mammootty's Kannur Squad not only emerged as one of the highest-grossing Malayalam movies of the year but also secured a spot among the top 10 highest-grossing Malayalam films ever.

Finally, the long wait to see Malayalam superstar Mammootty's latest movie Kannur Squad on streaming will come to an end soon. As opposed to the current industry practices, Kannur Squad has taken a longer-than-usual route to make its OTT debut.

Kannur Squad will become available for streaming on November 17 on Disney+Hotstar.

Kannur Squad's delayed OTT release

In the South Indian film industry, all new movies are released on the streaming platforms within four weeks of their initial theatrical release. However, Mammootty, who is also the producer of Kannur Squad, kept the movie out of the streaming for more than seven weeks.

It won't be wrong to say that this was pretty unusual for a South Indian movie in the post-pandemic situation.

It seems Mammootty wanted to give Kannur Squad more breathing space to maximize its gains at the box office. And the filmmaker's strategic delay in the film's OTT release paid off.

The film not only emerged as one of the highest-grossing Malayalam movies of the year but also secured a spot among the top 10 highest-grossing Malayalam films ever.

Mammootty's biggest hit

Kannur Squad also helped achieve a rare milestone in Mammootty's sprawling cinematic career. It became the first film in the superstar's career to cross the coveted Rs 100 crore mark at the global box office.

Earlier this month, Mammootty Kampany, which is Mammootty's home banner, confirmed the news about the film grossing Rs 100 crore from its worldwide ticket sales.

Probably, Kannur Squad is also the first film in a long time to comply with the Kerala Theatre Owners Association's demand for an extended cinema run.

Kannur Squad based on real events

Kannur Squad is inspired by real-life cases handled by a team of Kerala state police. The famous 'Kannur Squad' is known for solving some high-stake cases and working in areas far behind its jurisdictions.

Take, for example, the film deals with two high-profile cases handled by the real 'Kannur Squad.' And it narrates the gripping story of how this exceptional police unit challenged criminals who dared to defy the supremacy of the Kerala police.

Kannur Squad marks the directorial debut of cinematographer Roby Varghese Raj. And it was written by Muhammed Shafi and Rony David Raj. The film also stars Rony David Raj, Azees Nedumangad, Shabareesh Varma, Kishore and Vijayaraghavan.
