Kannur Squad the Mammootty-starrer investigative thriller released on September 28, is unstoppable at the box office. The film is garnering a lot of attention from the audience and critics alike for its realistic depiction of a police investigation. The film has reportedly earned more than ₹20 crore in just three days. While it grossed under ₹3 crore in the first two days, the movie saw a significant increase in collection on the third day, earning ₹3.30 crore at the Kerala box office alone. Additionally, it has shown great promise in overseas collections, grossing nearly ₹11 crore. Given its remarkable pace, Kannur Squad is expected to clock ₹50 crore soon.
The success of Kannur Squad
In terms of approach and treatment, the narrative of Kannur Squad is different from the over-the-top police investigation stories, in which officers are shown as mass heroes. The film takes the middle ground while depicting the incidents that can happen in an investigation. According to the makers, they infused the film with elements to enhance the commercial appeal but stuck to the realistic mood. The film’s technical quality is another highlight, with the background score by Sushin Shyam being perfect in all scenes.

The Mammootty factor
According to the makers, Mammootty was not the first choice to play the lead character - ASI George Martin. In an interview with Mathrubhumi screenwriter Rony revealed that they had initially approached someone else before narrating the story to Mammootty. However, they had felt that the story had a documentary feel to it, and decided to change the second half. This led to an increase in the scale of the movie and the need for a better performer to pull off the new version of the story.
