The films are said to be highly political - Laabam with a powerful social message and Thalaivii narrating the rise of late Jayalalitha, the former actress and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and an iconic figure in Tamil Nadu political history. This will be Kangana’s comeback movie in Kollywood after the 2008 movie Dhaam Dhoom with which she made her Tamil debut starring opposite Jayam Ravi. Thalaivii is directed by A.L Vijay and Aravind Swamy will play M.G. Ramachandran or MGR, Jayalalitha’s political advisor. The movie is said to also depict their relationship. A trilingual movie made in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu, the film ran into controversy when Jayalalitha’s niece filed a case against A.L Vijay for intellectual property rights.

Kangana is having a bad streak now. Her last two movies Panga and Judgemental Hai Kya did not get the commercial success it expected. Aravind Swami was last seen in Maniratnam’s Chekka Chivantha Vaanam which chronicled a bloody family feud among brothers. The movie received a lukewarm response despite its star-studded cast.
