Kangana Ranaut breaks silence on Emergency's ban in Punjab; 'Complete harassment of art and the artist'

Emergency banned in Punjab

Kangana Ranaut's directorial debut, Emergency was finally released in theatres today, January 17, 2025, after facing numerous controversies and multiple delays. However, the film is still facing issues as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee asked Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to ban Emergency screening in the state. Now, the actress took to her X account and reacted to it.

Kangana Ranaut on Emergency getting banned in Punjab

A political figure has tweeted in support of Emergency banned in Punjab and wrote, "I support the demand of @SGPCAmritsar to ban the film Emergency directed by @KanganaTeam a known critic of farmers & Sikhs without knowing their contribution towards our country."

Reacting to it, Kangana Ranaut replied, "This is complete harassment of art and the artist, from Punjab many cities are reporting that these people are not allowing Emergency to be screened. I have utmost respect for all religions and after studying and growing up in Chandigarh I have closely observed and followed Sikh religion. This is a complete lie and propaganda to tarnish my image and harm my film #Emergency."

Emergency plot

Kangana played the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the film. The biographical political drama revolves around the 21-month period from 1975 to 1977 when the late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed a state of emergency across India.

Anupam Kher played the role of Jayaprakash Narayan, who wrote her a letter from the jail. Shreyas Talpade was seen as the late Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Milind Soman, as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, asked her if she wanted a war.

Emergency on OTT

Emergency, following its theatrical release, will land on Netflix, according to the streaming partner listed on the poster. You can watch the film with your subscription at no extra charge. There is no clarity on when the film will drop on streaming.

Meanwhile, Kangana's resemblance to PM Indira Gandhi received praise from fans. One fan wrote on X, "#Emergency has been watched and my god #KanganaRanaut the actor that you are! I can safely say after watching the movie an actor like you comes once in a million years." Another commented, "Every moment of Emergency is a reminder of the cost of power. Kangana Ranaut delivers her finest performance yet."
