Kamal Haasan in Aalavandhan

Suresh Krissna's Aalavandhan was one of the biggest projects in the career of Kamal Haasan. The movie, which was released in 2001, carried humongous expectations among moviegoers, but ended up as a box office failure. The big budget film bankrolled by Kalaippuli S Thanu, however, is still loved by many movie buffs for various reasons.

It is now getting ready for a huge re-release in Tamil Nadu. Interestingly, Suresh's Rajinikanth-starrer Baba, too, had a re-release in December. Though the film opened to decent numbers on day one, it couldn't attract the audience further.

Cinephiles are curious to know how Aalavandhan is going to perform during its re-release. The makers will be releasing its digitally mastered version and they are likely to announce the release date soon. They have now come up with a poster which says that the film will hit close to 1,000 screens.

Raveena Tandon, Manisha Koirala, Sarath Babu, Vikram Gokhale, Milind Gunaji and Anu Haasan among others were seen as notable characters in the movie which had music composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy. Tirru's cinematography, Kasi Viswanathan's editing and Vikram Dharma's action episodes were some of the highlights of the project.

But what really stood the test of time is the dual roles essayed by Kamal Haasan. The film's conflict revolves around twins, an army officer and a psychopath who had different experiences during their childhood. The movie was ahead of its time with regard to its technicalities, especially its VFX scenes.

But the lack of grip in the latter half's screenplay was one of the major reasons many pointed out during its initial release more than two decades ago.
