Ulaganayagan's Aalavandhan and Superstar's Muthu will re-release in theatres next week
It looks like offscreen buddies and onscreen rivals Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth are all set to clash at the box office once again after years. And this time around, for the re-release of their respective films. Yes, Ulaganayagan's Aalavandhan and Superstar's Muthu will hit screens in the Telugu-speaking states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on December 8.

Kamal Haasan's film, a cult psychological action thriller
Kamal Haasan's Aalavandhan, which first hit screens in 2001, is now gearing up for re-release. The film will release across 1,000 theatres, revealed the film's producer Kalaippuli Thanu, who bankrolled Aalavandhan under his banner V Creations.
Aalavandhan is said to be an adaptation of the novel Dhayam, which was penned by Kamal Haasan himself in 1984. The actor appears in a dual role as brothers Nandu and Vijay, who were abused by their stepmother during their childhood. The star cast included Raveena Tandon, Manisha Koirala, Sarath Babu, Gollapudi Maruti Rao, Madurai GS Mani and Milind Gunaji. Aalavandhan was simultaneously filmed as Abhay.
Muthu, a commercial success
Rajinikanth's Muthu, was inspired by Mohanlal and Shobana's Thenmavin Kombath. The plot revolved around two men, who were each other's biggest pillar of support, falling in love with the same woman.
The film has an ensemble cast including Sarath Babu, Meena, Radha Ravi, Senthil, Vadivelu, Jayabharathi, Subhasri, Vichithra, Raghuvaran to name a few. AR Rahman's music was a massive hit at the box office with Thillana Thillana, Kuluvaliley and Oruvan Oruvan Mudhalali, cinematography by Ashok Rajan and editing by K Thanikachalam.
Muthu recently completed 25 years of release in Japan. When the film was released in the country, it ran for over 182 days and set a record at the box office. While Rajinikanth was promoted as the Indian Jackie Chan, Meena was known as the Black-eyed goddess in the country. Kavithaalaya Productions had bankrolled the film.
