Film background and production

The impending epic action-science fiction film Kalki 2898 AD is Nag Ashwin's brainchild. Nag Ashwin shot the film partially in Hindi and mostly in Telugu. Under the Vyjayanthi Movies banner, C. Aswani Dutt produced the film. Set in a post-apocalyptic world in 2898 AD, the film draws inspiration from Hindu scriptures. It serves as the pilot film for the upcoming Kalki Cinematic Universe. Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan, and Disha Patani are among the other actors starring alongside Prabhas in the film.

The film takes viewers on a multi-generational journey from the events of the Mahabharata in 3102 BC (the start of the Kali Yuga) to 2898 AD, all set against the backdrop of Indian mythology and a dystopian civilisation in the city of Kasi (Varanasi). At the story's centre lies the mysterious Kalki, the Hindu god Vishnu's tenth and last manifestation.

Kalki's development was postponed for a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which was first reported in February 2020. Set in a futuristic Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, filming ultimately got underway in July 2021 and proceeded intermittently in multiple legs for the following three years, culminating in March 2024. Kalki, with a production budget of ₹600 crore is the priciest film ever made in India.

Nitin Zihani Choudhary handled the production design, Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao handled the editing, Djordje Stojiljkovic handled the cinematography, and Santhosh Narayanan composed the score.

Release date

The 2024 Indian general election forced the postponement of Kalki 2898 AD's original May 9, 2024 release date. Its new global theatrical release date is June 27, 2024.
