After the trailer of Mammootty’s upcoming movie Kaathal – The Core had dropped online a few days ago, social media was already abuzz that the megastar will be pushing the envelope once again in his post-pandemic phase that has seen him take up roles that he had previously dared not to attempt.

Now, the synopsis of Kaathal – The Core, which is helmed by The Great Indian Kitchen director Jeo Baby, reveals the plot of the movie and also about Mammootty’s character in it. The megastar will be playing a retired co-operative bank official, whose sexual orientation apparently comes in the way of his political ambition, in the film that has Jyotika as its female lead.

Mammootty to play a homosexual in Jeo Baby’s Kaathal – The Core

The synopsis of the film, which was released ahead of its International Film Festival of India premiere, says that the character essays the role of George Devassy, who lives with wife Omana (Jyotika), daughter Femi and his father. Two days after George decides to contest the panchayat elections, Omana decides to file for divorce.

While the trailer of the film had hinted that the plot revolved around domestic abuse, the IFFI synopsis says that reason for Omana filing the petition is that George has been in a homosexual relationship, which she doesn’t have a problem with and only wants to end their marriage. Though the rumour affects his political ambitions, George dismisses these allegations. The movie explores “society’s perception of homosexual relationships, the dynamics of marriage and pursuit of justice”.

Few Malayalam superstars have played homosexual characters in Malayalam cinema, the most noted being Prithviraj Sukumaran in Rosshan Andrrews’ Mumbai Police. Last year, Mammootty had taken up the role of a bigot in Puzhu, which had released directly on Sony LIV, and was praised universally. With Kaathal – The Core, the actor will be praised, irrespective of his performance, for playing the part.

Kaathal – The Core to release in theatres on November 23

In an earlier interview, Jeo said that directing Mammootty is “more of a responsibility”. Kaathal The Core, which will be screened in the Indian Panorama section at IFFI, is set to release in theatres worldwide on November 23. The movie is also produced by the megastar under the banner of Mammootty Kampany.
