The Great Indian Kitchen maker Jeo Baby’s Kaathal The Core, which has Mammootty and Jyothika in lead roles, has grabbed eyeballs for ‘revolutionary’ subject
In the last few days, a synopsis, supposedly of Mammootty’s next, Kaathal The Core, has been circulating on social media, according to which, the Jeo Baby directorial revolves around the sexuality of the protagonist. Mammootty is Mathew Devassy, who lives ‘peacefully’ with his wife Omana (Jyothika) and kids Femi (Anagha Maya Ravi) and Kuttayi (Alex Alister). All is well until Mathew decides to contest a local body election, and Omana chooses that exact time to file for divorce citing cruelty. What kind of cruelty could he have inflicted on Omana? That’s the question that comes up naturally. And, if the synopsis is to be believed, it is that Mathew has been a closet homosexual, who has been having a relationship with a man, which he denies.
Kaathal The Core is Mammootty’s home production, following films like Rorschach, Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam and Kannur Squad and is yet another experimental venture from the banner. The actor-producer, though, contends that Kaathal The Core is as experimental as any other film. It is impossible to make a film that will run 100-200 days and make a few crores at the box office, he reckons. The fate of any film, big or small, lies with audiences; they are judge, jury and executioner. Speaking to the Malayalam digital publication Milestone Makers during the promotion of Kaathal The Core, which releases in theatres on November 23, the actor said that one can only wish for a film to do well at the box office. The actual result depends on whether the film appeals to the sensibilities of the movie-watching audience. Kaathal The Core, he adds, is an experiment, as was Kannur Squad, and that is because no one knows if any of these films will hit the desired target.

Kaathal The Core, meanwhile, is Jyothika’s return to Malayalam cinema after more than two decades. Getting her for the role of Omana was Mammootty’s suggestion. The film also stars Adarsh Sukumaran, Chinnu Chandni, Muthumani, Joji John, Josey Sijo, among others.
