One of the biggest releases of the year, Joker: Folie à Deux (aka Joker 2), has finally hit theaters in India after much anticipation. However, it seems that the film did not have a strong performance on its first Thursday, with collections dropping significantly. This is certainly not a good sign for a movie that has been riding on fan frenzy for over a year since its announcement and production. Unfortunately, the Joaquin Phoenix-led film has taken a disappointing turn on day two. Read on to learn more.
Joker: Folie à Deux Box Office
According to a report by Pinkvilla Joker: Folie à Deux earned only Rs 1.50 crore on its second day at the Indian box office, marking a 75 percent drop in collections compared to day one. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, the movie earned Rs 5.50 crore on its opening day, bringing its total to approximately Rs 7 crore. This is certainly not a promising trajectory for a film that was expected to be a tentpole superhero flick, especially considering the first Joker was the highest-grossing R-rated movie for half a decade before Deadpool and Wolverine took over.
Joker: Folie à Deux also benefited from the October 2 bank holiday for Gandhi Jayanti, which helped boost its initial collection. While a drop in collections following a bank holiday is expected, the significant decline in this case is concerning for the Lady Gaga starrer. Meanwhile, Joker 2 had opened to an extended weekend in India, and it will be interesting to see how the film performs beyond its first weekend. Fortunately, the movie has no competition from the Hindi circuit, as Bollywood completely avoided the October 2 release date this year.
About Joker: Folie à Deux
Joker: Folie à Deux finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his crimes as the Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love but also discovers the music that's always been inside him. The film also stars Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Catherine Keener (Get Out Capote), alongside Zazie Beetz, who reprises her role from Joker.
According to Comic Book Movie Todd Phillips has confirmed that Joker: Folie à Deux will be the last solo movie in this storyline starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. Phillips subtly indicated that this is the conclusion of the story, adding, "Again, you'll see the movie, and you'll go, 'Oh, I get it. The story is told.'" In other words, this is where the story ends. This is not good news for fans who were eagerly waiting for updates on Joker 3.
