John Wick anime prequel confirmed! Keanu Reeves’ Impossible Task to be explored reportedly

The John Wick universe is expanding rapidly, with four main films, a big-budget Amazon series, more projects in development, and a spin-off for Ballerina featuring Ana de Armas. Just when fans thought there couldn’t be more surprises, the creators introduced something new and exciting. According to reports, Keanu Reeves’ iconic assassin will soon be making his debut in the world of anime. This prequel film will explore John Wick’s life before he retired to live a quiet, married life. The film promises to answer some of the franchise’s biggest mysteries. Read on to learn more.

John Wick Anime Prequel in the Works

Fans of the John Wick series are well aware that one of the key unresolved mysteries in the franchise is the "Impossible Task"—the mission that led John Wick to retire and disappear from the assassin world. The task has only been mentioned a few times in the films, but its specifics remain a mystery. However, the upcoming anime prequel aims to shed light on this pivotal moment in Wick's life.

According to Comicbook Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick films, confirmed that an anime prequel is in the advanced stages of development. While Stahelski remained tight-lipped about the plot, he hinted that the film might address the "Impossible Task." He skillfully avoided giving a full answer but left fans with enough hope to speculate.

“We’re currently deep in development on a feature anime about John Wick,” Stahelski shared. “It’s a prequel to the movies, which is awesome. It’s fun that it’s in a different medium.” When asked if the prequel would reveal the Impossible Task that led to Wick’s retirement, Stahelski teased, “Ish. You’re pretty close, but it’s animated fun. It’s meant to be fun. Some of the prequels and sequels you see in other franchises are built a certain way, but we just want to enjoy the Wick world. We’ve already concluded one part with John Wick: Chapter 4 so now we’re going back, and using a different medium.”

Ballerina is set to hit theaters on June 6, 2025. Additionally, John Wick: Under the High Table another project from the Wick universe, is in development, though its streaming platform is yet to be confirmed.
