A slew of films hit screens on the occasion of Diwali, but it looks like they haven't got the kind of opening that was expected. The biggies that hit screens in November included Karthik Subbaraj's Jigarthanda Double X and Raju Murugan's Japan. The others include Vikram Prabhu's Raid and Kaali Venkat's Kida.

Both biggies get lukewarm opening

It is said that since the film released just two days ahead of Diwali, they haven't got a steady footfall. The Tamil Nadu government allowed five special shows for Japan from November 10 to 15, which will start at 9am and end at 1.30am. However, the morning and afternoon shows have met with a lukewarm response as people were out Diwali shopping and were travelling to their hometowns.

Japan gets negative reviews
Karthi's 25th film Japan has opened to negative reviews from the critics and audience alike. Critics panned the film calling it a complete misfire from Karthi and Raju Murugan. The negative reviews are likely to affect the shows further.

Leo continues to be screened in movie halls
In the meantime, Lokesh Kanagaraj and Vijay's latest outing Leo continues to be screened in movie halls across the state. According to ETimes, roughly 130 movie halls are still screening the film, which was released on October 19.

Jigarthanda Double X movie review: Karthik Subbaraj delivers a memorable cinematic experience

Vikram Prabhu's Raid, The Marvels (English) and Salman Khan's Tiger 3 have also occupied screens. Critically acclaimed film Kida, which received a standing ovation after its screening at IFFI Goa has released today. The film stars Kaali Venkat and Poo Ramu in the lead and is directed by Ra Venkat.

Diwali shows in Tamil Nadu
The pattern was repeated last year as well when Karthi's Sardar and Sivakarthikeyan's Prince released on the occasion. While Prince turned out to be a damp squib, Sarda opened to good reviews and performed well at the box office. This time around, Jigarthanda starring SJ Suryah and Raghava Lawrence is expected to perform well in the Diwali race.
