On Monday, Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan’s abrupt reply to the Deputy Chairman made headlines. The actor-turned-politician asserted that she had forged her own unique character since her elevation to the upper chamber.
Jaya Bachchan's response to being addressed by her husband's name
When Harivansh Narayan Singh, the deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha, remarked, "Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan Ji, please" the whole thing began. "Sirf Jaya Bachchan bolte to kaafi hojata (Sir, just saying Jaya Bachchan would have been enough)," Jaya shouted in Hindi in response.
The chair displays the complete name, prompting Deputy Chairman Harivansh to explain his pronunciation.
Jaya Bachchan, the head of the Samajwadi Party, went on to say, "Yeh jo hain kuch naya tarika hain ki mahilaayen apni pati ke naam se jaani jaye. Unka koi astitva nahi. Unki koi upalabdh hi nahi hain, apne mein aur astitva nahi hain. Yeh jo naya shuru hua hain." Which loosely translates as "This is a new way for women to be known by their husband's name. They have no identity of their own. They have no achievements of their own and no existence. This is something new that has started."
A subsequent statement from Harivansh Narayan Singh to Jaya Bachchan was, "You have many achievements."
Public reaction and praise for Jaya Bachchan's courage
Some of her admirers praised her for her "bravery" in response to the video. "No, but why did they include Amitabh?" inquired one person. "Or is it happening to everyone if she hasn't included it?" another person questioned. "Oh, by the way, she's totally not wrong," someone else said.
"People today are so selective," one fan wrote in response to the sexist remarks, demonstrating that they failed to understand her argument. If she had been any other woman, the responses would have supported her position. Still, she has a point. Even before she became known as a "Bachchan," she had enormous acting success. Indeed, we have made significant progress.
Meanwhile, Jaya Bachchan, filled with tears, mentioned the unfortunate deaths of three students at a Delhi coaching institution. She expressed her sadness over the tragedy, pointing out that while people mourn the students' loss, no one is thinking about their financial support.
