After Kabir Singh, Sandeep Reddy Vanga delivered another blockbuster with the crime thriller Animal. The film starring Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, and Triptii Dimri was a major success at the box office. However, the film also faced a lot of controversies and also received major criticism. Earlier, renowned lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar slammed the film and now he took a dig at the film yet again for its 'lick my shoe' scene. He also stated that today's angry young man in films is becoming a 'caricature of himself.'
In a conversation with We Are Yuvaa when Javed Akhtar was asked about the 'angry young man' image of a hero, which he created with Salim Khan in the film Zanjeer, he criticized the trend of depicting the male protagonist as a domineering and aggressive figure. The screenwriter said, “In the south also, he (the hero) is turning into a caricature."
The writer then slammed Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal by mentioning one of the scenes where Ranbir Kapoor's character asks Triptii Dimti's character to lick his shoe, He said, "Now he is the kind of man who wants a woman to lick his shoe. He is already starting to turn into a caricature of an angry young man or a strong man.” Later, the interviewer asked him if he had watched the film. The lyricist said, "No, thank god."
Meanwhile, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Animal was released in theatres on December 1, 2023. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor, and Triptii Dimri, among others. Although the film was a huge success at the box office earning Rs. 917 crore worldwide, it was called out for peddling toxic masculinity and being a highly problematic film.
