Javed Akhtar has now responded to Sandeep Reddy Vanga taking a dig at him and Mirzapur, produced by his son Farhan Akhtar.
Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles, and directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, has turned out to be the most controversial movie in years. While the movie managed to earn massive numbers at the box office, it also started a big debate between people who stood with the ideology of the film and those who were against it. Not just fans and general audiences, but the director himself chose to take digs at many of his contemporaries who were not in sync with his idea. One of the most prominent fights he took was with the legendary poet-writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar. It turns out the latter has now decided to give his reaction to Vanga’s comments in a very candid way.
To take you back in time a little, Javed Akhtar, in one of his speeches, spoke about the new crop of movies that are problematic. He specifically spoke about the scene from Animal where Ranbir Kapoor asks Triptii Dimri’s character to lick his shoe. He also mentioned how a man finds it okay to slap a woman, which was a rampant conversation during Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s last release, Kabir Singh. Sandeep, reacting to the comments, took some low blows and even took a dig at Akhtar’s son Farhan Akhtar, who produced the show Mirzapur.
Javed Akhtar, in a new interview with Mojo Story, has reacted to Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s comments. “I was not criticising the filmmaker at all. I think in a democratic society, he has the right to make one Animal, and many Animals. I was concerned about the audience, not about the filmmaker. He has the right to make any film,” said Javed. The legendary writer went on to reveal that he has yet to see the film and that he has no problem with Sandeep Reddy Vanga valorizing a character because he has the constitutional right. Akhtar is concerned about the many people who are celebrating these films.
Javed Akhtar also spoke about Sandeep Reddy Vanga criticising Mirzapur, which is produced by Farhan Akhtar. “When he responded to me, I was honoured. In 53 years of my career, he could not find one film, one script, one scene, one dialogue, or one song. So he had to go to my son's office and find a TV serial, which is neither acted, directed, nor written by Farhan. His company has produced it. Nowadays, these big companies like Excel are producing a lot of things. So one of them is this. He mentioned that. It flattered me to no end. 53 years ke career mein tum kuchh bhi nahi nikaal paye (You couldn't find anything sexist in 53 years of my career)? What a shame," Javed added.
Animal has made Rs 1,000 crore globally and has turned out to be a monstrous hit. The movie now has a sequel in the making titled Animal Park, and the buzz around the same is massive. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else in the world of streaming and films.
