In Jailer, Nelson seems to have done a swell job celebrating Rajinikanth's onscreen image, delivering an entertaining crowd-pleaser.
Superstar Rajinikanth's much-awaited movie Jailer opened in cinemas on Thursday to a roaring response from the fans. And if initial reviews are anything to go by, then the movie seems to have hit the bull's eye. The movie is garnering positive reviews from all corners, even though some have complained about the problems in the second act and slightly lengthy run-time. Well, the majority of the fans of the Superstar don't seem to mind the movie's shortcomings.
Director Nelson and the producers had a clear vision for Jailer. They didn't want to achieve some artistic breakthrough. All they wanted was to celebrate the legend of Rajinikanth and in that respect, they seem to have kicked the ball out of the park.
Jailer movie review: This Rajinikanth movie is an enjoyable and pure fan service
A few days ahead of the release of Jailer, the synopsis of the movie surfaced online. And its uncanny similarities with Kamal Haasan's blockbuster Vikram were hard to miss . The plot about a retired cop going after his son's killer kicked off a lot of curiosity among fans of Tamil cinema. We saw how Kamal's Vikram handled the loss of pain and took the war to his son's killers. And now, it was time to see how Rajinikanth's Muthuvel Pandian handled his revenge.
And it seems Nelson has done a swell job celebrating Rajinikanth's onscreen image, delivering an entertaining crowd-pleaser. With the cinematic universe and sequels to blockbusters sort of becoming a norm in Tamil cinema, it has got everyone wondering whether Jailer will have a follow-up movie.
Like Vikram, Jailer also ends on a high note leaving possibilities for a sequel. In the end, the main villain talks about "some people" and a "large syndicate and network" and warns Muthuvel Pandian that he can't get away and live in peace with his family. And we also see three superstars - Rajinikanth, Shivarajkumar, and Mohanlal- come together on screen to stage a multi-front attack.
Jailer star Rajinikanth: I faced a tsunami of hate in the 70s
Now the question is will Nelson follow the story thread and give us another movie? It's unlikely. In a career spanning nearly 50 years, Rajinikanth has always avoided sequels. It remains to be seen whether he will make an exception under the current circumstances in Tamil cinema. Also, he has back-to-back movies lined up. Even if Nelson comes up with a story for the Jailer sequel, it might take a while before anything could materialise.
