At the Jailer audio launch, Kalanithi Maran weighed in on the ongoing debate as to who is the worthy contender to replace Superstar Rajinikanth in Tamil cinema.
It's no secret that media mogul Kalanithi Maran is a big fan of Superstar Rajinikanth. And he reaffirmed his unwavering loyalty to his favourite star while speaking at the audio release event of Jailer . Kalanithi, who is also the founder of Sun Pictures, expressed confidence about the movie's potential to become a big hit at the box office.
While Kalanithi Maran admitted that he hadn't seen Jailer , he shared the sentiment of those who had, describing their feedback as overwhelmingly positive. He recounted Rajinikanth's early reaction to the film's narrative, saying, "Rajinikanth was the first person to hear the Jailer narration. He termed it 'first class' and expressed immense confidence in Nelson. It echoed his sentiments about Enthiran. So, Nelson, have no doubts, Jailer will be a blockbuster, a testament to your hard work."
The Verdict: None can take the Superstar title from Rajinikanth because...
However, Maran humorously pointed out a minor detail regarding the song Hukum, which pays an ode to Rajinikanth's rich cinematic legacy spanning over four decades. "Super Subu captured our sentiments about Thalaivar in the Hukum song. But, a minor correction. My grandfather, Kalaignar (M. Karunanidhi), enjoyed Rajini sir's films. My father, Murasoli Maran, was also an avid viewer. As for me, you know I'm an admirer. Even my daughter is an ardent fan. If you look at social media, you can see even four-year-olds dancing to Rajini sir's songs. Not three but five generations revel in Rajini sir's movies. He isn't a record-breaker, but a record-maker," he said evoking a rousing applause from everyone present at the Nehuru Stadium.
He also weighed in on the ongoing debate as to who is the worthy contender to replace Superstar Rajinikanth in Tamil cinema. For many years now, people have been predicting the end of Rajinikanth's ability to be a box office draw. However, with every new movie, Rajinikanth's stardom continues to challenge his naysayers. Offering a candid perspective, Maran explained the fundamental requirements one needs to meet to be worthy of Rajinikanth's place in Indian cinema.
"Some might wonder whether Rajini sir has no contenders, he indeed does. As Thalapathy Vijay has said, Rajini sir competes against Rajini sir himself. The industry is filled with aspirants who seek to become like him. I have one message for them. When, at 72 years old, producers line up to collaborate with you and you maintain Rajini sir's velocity, charisma, and fan base, then, and only then, can you claim to have taken his place. Until that moment, Rajini sir remains the sole Superstar for the entire Indian film fraternity," Maran added.
Written and directed by Nelson, Jailer is due in cinemas on August 10.
