The streaming giant announced that the Tovino Thomas-starrer will drop on Netflix soon,
Speculations were rife that Tovino Thomas’ Minnal Murali will release directly on Netflix and now, the streaming giant has officially confirmed that the Malayalam action flick will drop on their platform along with its dubbed versions in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and English.
The movie has Tovino playing Jason who gets struck by lightning and acquires superpowers. Guru Somasundaram, Aju Varghese and Harisree Ashokan play the supporting characters in the film, directed by Basil Joseph. Netflix made the announcement through a teaser video that it shared on its YouTube page.
Minnal Murali had gone into production in December 2019 and had wrapped up filming in July 2019 after multiple delays due to the pandemic.
In a press statement from Netflix, Tovino said that he was “committed” to the character and had spent time with its filmmaker to “ensure the best possible outcome and immense amounts of work went into creating Minnal Murali”. The movie’s schedule spanned 111 days.
The movie also marks the second collaboration between Tovino and Basil Joseph after Godha. The director, who had previously helmed Kunjiramayanam, said that the plan was to create “a superhero that people could relate to and connect with on an emotional level”.
This is in keeping with Tovino’s earlier statements that even if the superhero elements were removed from the movie, it’s narrative would still entertain the audience.
While the team had earlier planned for a theatrical release for the movie during Onam 2020, the pandemic lockdown and the consequent shutting of theatres in Kerala in 2020 and 2021, had prompted the makers to opt for an OTT release.
Minnal Murali marks Tovino’s second release this year after Kala, which hit theatres earlier this year, and is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
