Will Dinakar Thoogudeepa make a Navagraha sequel?
Dinakar Thoogudeepa is all of 5 films old as a filmmaker, with the 5th set to release in theatres on January 24. Although his debut directorial, Jothe Jotheyalli was a commercial success, it is his follow-up, Navagraha that is spoken of to this day. The action heist thriller, which had Dinakar’s brother Darshan in the lead, was inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs and adapted for Kannada audiences as the theft of the Mysuru Dasara Ambaari.

Hailed as the best heist thriller in Kannada cinema, the film was not a big hit at the time of its release, as it portrayed Darshan as a character with grey shades. Over the years, though, it has grown in popularity, with fans often wondering if Dinakar would consider making a sequel, even though the primary cast – all of who were second-generation actors and sons of popular villains – were all shown to have perished.
Dinakar Thoogudeepa: In the future, I could do a Navagraha 2, but not now
Dinakar, who is currently in the midst of promoting his next, Royal, was recently asked if Navagraha 2 is on the cards for him. He has, after all, announced a film with Darshan, which will take off after the actor’s next two commitments. “If audiences really want to see another film in the genre, more specifically, a new version of Navagraha, it could be something to consider in the future; I could do a Navagraha 2. At present, honestly, I’m not in the mindset to make a heist thriller. My entire focus is on Royal, right now,” said the filmmaker, speaking to Suddimane Official.
Royal, which stars Viraat, Sanjana Anand and Chaya Singh in pivotal roles, is, according to Dinakar, a commercial entertainer that centres on a mother-son relationship. After Royal, the filmmaker’s next, before he collaborates with Darshan, with whom he’s done 2 films – Navagraha and Saarathi – and had announced another, Sarvantharyaami, will be a film to launch his sister's son Chandu. As for his film with Darshan, Dinakar says that it is too early right now to talk about the subject he will explore, but reiterates that it will not be based on the script he was working on for the late Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar.
