IPL media rights auction will see Apple, Netflix and Facebook compete with Amazon, Disney

Sky Sports bought the rights for Rs 16,347 crore five years ago and are the current broadcasting sponsor of the tournament.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the biggest and most celebrated spectacles in the world of cricket. The fans’ eyes will soon turn to the IPL media rights auction, and reports suggest that we will see giants like Apple and Netflix submit bids.

As reported by Times of India, Apple will pick up the tender document next week. Reports also suggest that Facebook and Netflix may also end up being a part of the auction.

Disney, Zee-Sony, Amazon and TV18-Viacom, who are some of India’s biggest players in the media, have already bought the tender documents and will look to get their hands on the media rights to the IPL.

The IPL has grown in the last 14 years, and so has the price tag for the media rights. Star Sports, who are the broadcasting sponsors of this year’s IPL, bought the rights for Rs 16,347 crore five years ago. According to Economic Times, the price may range between Rs 45,000 crore- Rs 50,000 crore this year.

They also report that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have set a base price of Rs 18,130 crore for the television rights for 2023-2027. Just like the broadcasting rights, the digital rights for the cricket tournament has been set at Rs 12,200 crore by the BCCI.

The tournament has grabbed eyes outside of India and the overseas broadcasting and digital rights has been set at Rs 1,100 crore. This year’s IPL matches can be streamed live on Disney+ Hotstar.
