Interstellar re-release box office day 1

Interstellar Re-Release Box Office Day 1: The word is out—Interstellar, the Christopher Nolan epic that left audiences in awe a decade ago, is back on the big screens in India, exclusively in IMAX format. The buzz around its re-release was so intense that advance bookings opened a month in advance—an unprecedented move for a re-released film in the country. This frenzy led to massive pre-sales, creating strong word-of-mouth and even higher expectations for both its opening and lifetime run on Indian screens. Now that it has hit theaters, the day-one collection is out, and it has surpassed Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Tumbbad, and Laila Majnu, making it the most promising opener in the re-release category.

Interstellar Re-Release Box Office

Directed by Christopher Nolan, Interstellar was originally released in 2014 and stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Timothée Chalamet, and a star-studded ensemble. The film follows a future where Earth becomes uninhabitable, and ex-NASA pilot Joseph Cooper is tasked with piloting a spacecraft alongside a team of researchers to find a new planet for humanity, as per IMDb.

Re-released in India after 11 years on February 7, 2024, the film has completed its first day on the big screen. According to Movie Talkies, Interstellar earned ₹2.50 crore nett and ₹3 crore gross on its first day—a massive achievement. To put this into perspective, it has outperformed fresh releases like Badass Ravi Kumar and Loveyapa at the Indian box office.

Moreover, Interstellar has set a new benchmark in the re-release culture, surpassing the previous top performers. Recently, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani generated significant buzz upon its re-release, earning ₹1.15 crore nett on opening day. Another notable re-release, Tumbbad, performed even better with ₹1.50 crore on its first day. However, Interstellar has outshone both, earning a crore more than the Tumbbad re-release.

Will Interstellar Beat Titanic?

Now, Interstellar is competing with James Cameron’s Titanic, which currently holds the record for the highest-grossing re-release in India. The Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet classic earned ₹20.5 crore during its re-release. If Interstellar maintains its momentum, it has the potential to surpass Titanic’s record.

Upon its original 2014 release in India, Interstellar earned ₹38 crore. It will be interesting to see how well the film performs in its second run, as it remains one of the most highly anticipated re-releases of all time in the country. The response so far has been overwhelmingly positive.
