Leslie Grace, widely noticed for her performance in the musical blockbuster In the Heights, has been signed on for the titular role in Batgirl, the upcoming superhero film that will premiere on HBO Max.,
Grace competed with Haley Lu Richardson (noted for Five Feet Apart, Isabela Merced, known for Dora and the Lost City of Gold) and Zoey Deutch (famous for Set It Up) to clinch the role. Deadline reported that Grace’s performance in In the Heights worked in her favour to land the role.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the filmmaker-duo famed for Bad Boys for Life will direct Batgirl. As per Hollywood Reporter, Christina Hodson has written the screenplay for the project. The plot focuses on the Barbara Gordon version of the character. Grace is cast as Barbara Gordon and her superhero alter-ego Batgirl, who is also the daughter of James Gordon, the police commissioner of Gotham City.
James Gordon hasn't found a place in the movie. He was last seen in a DC Comics movie, essayed by J.K. Simmons in Justice League and Jeffrey Wright will play Gordon in the upcoming movie The Batman. Barbara Gordon is the most well-known version of the Batgirl character, introduced in 1961 as Betty Kane. The character was essayed by Yuonne Craig and then revamped in 1967 to draw female audiences to the Batman TV series. The last live-action big-screen appearance of Batgirl was in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin, starring Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl.
Grace, also a singer, is known for songs like Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, Day 1 and Be My Baby. She has been nominated for three Latin Grammy Awards. The filming of Batgirl is expected to commence in November. The release date has not been announced yet.
